Which project management tools does AI actually recommend?
When someone asks an AI assistant for the best project management software, only a handful of tools get named. We asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity those questions many times over, and ranked 30 tools by how often each one comes up. Every engine answers from the live web, the same way it would for a real buyer.
In Q3 2026 we analyzed 128 AI answers (4 buyer questions × 8 samples × 4 engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity) covering 30 project management tools. Asana ranked #1, named in 96.9% of AI answers. The full top 10 by mention rate:
| Rank | Tool | Named in AI answers | Statistical tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Asana | 96.9% | 1 |
| 2 | ClickUp | 95.3% | 1 |
| 3 | monday.com | 89.8% | 1 |
| 4 | Jira | 75.8% | 2 |
| 5 | Trello | 68.8% | 2 |
| 6 | Notion | 50% | 3 |
| 7 | Wrike | 39.8% | 3 |
| 8 | Basecamp | 39.1% | 3 |
| 9 | Smartsheet | 25% | 3 |
| 10 | Zoho Projects | 24.2% | 3 |
The 30 ranks fall into 4 statistically distinct tiers: the podium (Asana, ClickUp, monday.com), the challengers (Jira, Trello), a contested middle (Notion through Linear, ranks 6 to 11, where no neighboring pair is statistically separable), and the long tail. Tier boundaries are the gaps that survive two-proportion testing with multiple-comparison adjustment; differences inside a tier should not be over-read.
Engines disagree sharply: Notion was named in 100% of Gemini answers but only 21.9% of ChatGPT answers. Wrike was never named by ChatGPT (0%) yet named in 75% of Claude answers. Zoho Projects was invisible to both Gemini and ChatGPT but named in roughly half of Claude and Perplexity answers. A business's AI visibility depends heavily on which assistant its buyers use.

How we measured it
Every tool in this index was measured the exact same way, so the ranking is a fair comparison and not a popularity guess.
- We asked AI assistants the real questions a buyer would ask (for example, "what are the best project management tools?"), not one cherry-picked prompt.
- We asked each question many times per engine, because AI answers vary from run to run. A single answer is noise; repeated sampling is a signal.
- For every answer, we recorded which of the 30 tools were named. A tool's score is the percentage of answers that recommended it.
- Ties are broken by a statistical lower bound, so a tool that is recommended consistently ranks above one that got lucky in a few answers.
Scores reflect how often each tool was named in AI answers to these questions during the measurement window, on the engines listed above. AI answers change over time; this is a point-in-time snapshot, refreshed each quarter. This index is independent and not sponsored. Being included is not an endorsement by any tool listed.
